Stretch Marks: Causes, Treatment and Realistic Expectations

Stretch marks are a type of scar that forms when skin stretches or shrinks quickly. They commonly occur with pregnancy, growth spurts, weight change and rapid muscle gain.

Why they form Rapid change can disrupt collagen and elastin in the deeper skin. Genetics, hormones and prolonged use of strong corticosteroids may also influence risk. New marks may be red, purple or dark brown and usually become paler over time.

Treatment Stretch marks are harmless and do not require treatment. Early marks may respond better than old pale marks. Options may include prescription retinoids for appropriate non-pregnant patients, microneedling, fractional laser, radiofrequency or selected light treatments. Results are variable and complete removal is unlikely.

Safety and expectations Moisturisers may reduce dryness but do not reliably prevent or erase marks. Avoid unregulated creams, especially products containing potent steroids. Treatment selection must consider skin tone because inflammation can cause pigmentation.

When to seek care Medical assessment is recommended when stretch marks appear suddenly without an obvious cause, are unusually wide or are accompanied by weakness, easy bruising or other hormonal symptoms.
