Glaucoma: Risk Factors, Testing, Treatment and Prevention of Vision Loss

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, often gradually and sometimes without early warning symptoms.

Risk factors Risk increases with age, family history, elevated eye pressure, diabetes, steroid use, previous eye injury and certain anatomical features.

Testing Diagnosis requires more than measuring pressure. A complete evaluation may include optic-nerve examination, visual-field testing, corneal thickness measurement, drainage-angle assessment and OCT imaging.

Treatment Treatment may include pressure-lowering drops, laser procedures or surgery. Lost vision usually cannot be restored, so adherence and follow-up are essential.

Urgent symptoms Sudden severe eye pain, headache, halos, nausea and blurred vision can indicate acute angle closure and require emergency care.
