Fever in Children: Causes, Warning Signs and Home Care

Fever is a rise in body temperature, usually caused by infection. The child’s age, behaviour, breathing, hydration and accompanying symptoms matter more than the number alone.

What causes fever? Most childhood fevers are caused by viral infections, while some are due to bacterial infections. Vaccination, heat exposure and inflammatory conditions can also raise temperature.

Home care Offer frequent fluids, dress the child lightly and allow rest. Fever medicine may improve comfort when used in the correct dose for age and weight. Aspirin should not be given to children unless specifically prescribed.

Warning signs Urgent assessment is needed for a baby under 3 months with a temperature of 38°C or higher, breathing difficulty, a non-blanching rash, seizure, severe lethargy, stiff neck, dehydration or a child who is difficult to wake.

When to contact a doctor Seek advice when fever lasts several days, repeatedly returns, or is accompanied by persistent pain, poor drinking, vomiting or worsening illness.

Treat the child, not only the thermometer reading. A child who looks very unwell needs assessment even if the temperature is not very high.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is every fever dangerous?

No. Fever is usually part of the immune response, but age and associated symptoms determine risk.

Should a sleeping child be woken for medicine?

Not always; comfort, hydration and clinical advice guide treatment.

When is fever urgent in a baby?

A temperature of 38°C or higher in a baby under 3 months needs prompt assessment.

Can teething cause high fever?

Teething may cause mild temperature elevation but should not be assumed to explain a high fever.
