Sunscreen Guide: SPF, Broad-Spectrum Protection and Correct Use

Sunscreen reduces ultraviolet damage that contributes to sunburn, pigmentation, premature ageing and skin cancer. It works best as part of a complete sun-protection routine.

Choosing sunscreen Select a broad-spectrum, water-resistant product with SPF 30 or higher. Broad-spectrum means protection from both UVA and UVB radiation. Choose a texture suitable for your skin so that you can use enough consistently.

Correct application Apply generously to exposed skin before going outdoors. Commonly missed areas include ears, neck, scalp parting, hands and tops of feet. Reapply about every two hours outdoors and after swimming, sweating or towel drying.

Additional protection Sunscreen does not block all ultraviolet radiation. Seek shade, wear protective clothing, sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat, and avoid unnecessary exposure during peak sunlight.

Sensitive and pigmented skin Fragrance-free mineral formulas may suit some sensitive skin. Tinted sunscreens containing iron oxides can provide added visible-light protection, which may be useful for melasma and post-inflammatory pigmentation.

Babies, children and people taking photosensitising medicines need age-appropriate professional advice.
